The bits that went temporarily missing from UPN screens. Janeway doubts the think tank's morality but not their ability, and tries to get Seven to view their recruitment offer as more than just another puzzle.

Think Tank

Missing Scenes

This episode is one of a number in season five which were filmed for a broadcast length of approximately 44 minutes, but which were transmitted in edited form by UPN in order to slice two minutes off the running time. The transcripts below are of the scenes and scene fragments that are missing from that UPN broadcast, based on a comparison between the first airing on UPN and the full version of the episode. Please note that an entirely different set of cuts may have been made on subsequent repeats of the episode by UPN, and that syndication reruns seem to be showing the episodes intact.

Dialogue shown in italic type is only included in the full version of the episode. Dialogue shown in normal type is in both versions. Scene start timings are approximate, rounded up or down to the nearest minute, and are based on the UK PAL broadcast format (25 frames per second).

Bridge. 20 minutes.

[It was an interesting experience.] [Every escape route we've considered is clearly a trap.] [Then we have no choice. We'll... see what the Think Tank comes up with.]

After Janeway and Seven return from their visit to the think tank's ship, they talk over their impressions with Chakotay on the Bridge.

Chakotay:

I take it first contact was a success?

Janeway:

I have some qualms about their morality, but I believe they can help us.

Seven:

It was an interesting experience.

Chakotay:

Glad to hear it. We don't have much good news of our own. Every escape route we've considered is clearly a trap, and more Hazari ships keep joining the search.

Janeway:

Then we have no choice. We'll put our own plans on hold, and see what the Think Tank comes up with.

Janeway's Ready Room. 23 minutes.

[A curious proposition.] [The solution is obvious.] [This isn't a puzzle, Seven. There's no solution.]

After the shock of finding Seven of Nine on Kurros's list of the things the think tank would like in return for saving Voyager from the Hazari, Janeway consults her ex-Borg crewmember on the subject.

Seven:

A curious proposition.

Janeway:

To say the least.

Seven:

How do you wish to proceed?

Janeway:

I want your opinion.

Seven:

They are offering us the assistance we require. I am the payment they require. The solution is obvious.

Janeway:

This isn't a puzzle, Seven. There's no solution. What's at issue here is your future.

Seven:

The issue is Voyager's survival.

Janeway:

Sit. Please. While I still question this Think Tank's way of doing things, here is a genuine opportunity for exploration. It could be the chance of a lifetime.

Seven:

You are saying I should go?

Janeway:

I don't want you to go. But it's not my right to tell you what to do. Until now I've kept a close eye on your progress, helped you with decisions, but I think you've learned enough as an individual to make this decision yourself. Would you like to join them?

Seven:

I am intrigued. They are an unusual collective, with a compelling mission. But I require more data.

Janeway:

That's why I want you to talk to Kurros yourself. See if he can answer your questions.

Seven:

Captain. I appreciate your giving me this choice.

Janeway:

You've earned it. And remember, if you do choose to go, make sure it's what you want, not what you think is best for Voyager. We're getting out of this. With or without the Think Tank's help.
