The bits that went temporarily missing from UPN screens. The Doctor overrates himself and underrates Harry Kim, then later admits that he might have been a little arrogant in doing so.

Missing Scenes

This episode is one of a number in season five which were filmed for a broadcast length of approximately 44 minutes, but which were transmitted in edited form by UPN in order to slice two minutes off the running time. The transcripts below are of the scenes and scene fragments that are missing from that UPN broadcast, based on a comparison between the first airing on UPN and the full version of the episode. Please note that an entirely different set of cuts may have been made on subsequent repeats of the episode by UPN, and that syndication reruns seem to be showing the episodes intact.

Dialogue shown in italic type is only included in the full version of the episode. Dialogue shown in normal type is in both versions. Scene start timings are approximate, rounded up or down to the nearest minute, and are based on the UK PAL broadcast format (25 frames per second).

Corridor/Transporter Room. 3 minutes.

[Who's leading the mission?] [You're looking at him.] [Of course, having me on the team will more than compensate for any lack of experience on your part.]

Having picked up a distress call and altered course to investigate while spending a night in the Big Chair, Harry Kim has been nominated to lead the away team by Chakotay. On the way to the transporter room he tries to brief the Doctor.

Doctor:

The distress call was automated?

Kim:

That's right. I'm hoping whoever sent it is still alive.

Doctor:

Who's leading the mission?

Kim:

You're looking at him.

Doctor:

Really!

Kim:

Problem?

Doctor:

No. I just thought, given the circumstances - a new planet, unknown hazards - that Commander Chakotay or Tuvok would be in charge.

Kim:

I am a senior officer, Doc. I've been on this ship for five years. I think I can handle an away mission.

Doctor:

I certainly didn't mean any offence.

Kim:

None taken.

They enter the transporter room.

Doctor:

Of course, having me on the team will more than compensate for any lack of experience on your part.

Kim:

Energise.

Sickbay. 41 minutes.

[I held you up as an example of how an artificial intelligence could exceed its programming.] [I'd better get to the Bridge. You never know when Ensign Kim will be called upon to take command again.] [Voyager could do worse.]

In the aftermath of the sentient bomb having blown both itself and its fellows up, Harry Kim makes a social visit to Sickbay.

Kim:

Anyone home?

Doctor:

Ensign. Feeling well, I hope?

Kim:

Perfect. On my way to the Bridge for another night shift. Came by to check on Seven.

Doctor:

You just missed her.

Kim:

What's her prognosis?

Doctor:

She'll need another week of regeneration, but I expect she'll make a full recovery.

Kim:

Good news.

Doctor:

Considering I was responsible for her injuries, you can imagine my relief.

Kim:

Well, you weren't exactly yourself at the time.

Doctor:

That's not what I mean. I was the one who asked you to bring that device aboard in the first place. I even argued with the Captain to keep it aboard after we had learned what it was.

Kim:

It was an artificial intelligence, like you. I have to admit, his personality made you seem like Mr Congeniality. Look, Doc. The truth is, I never would have got through to him without you.

Doctor:

From what I heard, I wasn't much help.

Kim:

You were. I held you up as an example of how an artificial intelligence could exceed its programming. I didn't realise how true that was until today.

Doctor:

It seems your strategy worked. Thank you.

Kim:

I'd better get to the Bridge. You never know when Ensign Kim will be called upon to take command again.

Doctor:

Voyager could do worse.
