The bits that went temporarily missing from UPN screens. Janeway questions Seven's research methods into the subject of romance, and the Doctor and Paris discuss the various ways in which they have a vested interest in Seven's first date.

Someone To Watch Over Me

Missing Scenes

This episode is one of a number in season five which were filmed for a broadcast length of approximately 44 minutes, but which were transmitted in edited form by UPN in order to slice two minutes off the running time. The transcripts below are of the scenes and scene fragments that are missing from that UPN broadcast, based on a comparison between the first airing on UPN and the full version of the episode. Please note that an entirely different set of cuts may have been made on subsequent repeats of the episode by UPN, and that syndication reruns seem to be showing the episodes intact.

Dialogue shown in italic type is only included in the full version of the episode. Dialogue shown in normal type is in both versions. Scene start timings are approximate, rounded up or down to the nearest minute, and are based on the UK PAL broadcast format (25 frames per second).

Janeway's Ready Room. 4 minutes.

[I read B'Elanna's report. Needless to say, I was surprised.] [This is a starship, not a nature preserve.] [You shouldn't be taking field notes on the crew.]

Shortly after the scene in the Mess Hall where B'Elanna threatens Seven with violence for eavesdropping, taking notes, and generally invading her and Tom's privacy, Janeway manages to fit in a brief discussion on the subject with Seven while getting ready for an away mission that will take her off ship for a couple of days.

Janeway:

I read B'Elanna's report. Needless to say, I was surprised.

Seven:

I was careful not to violate protocols.

Janeway:

That's not the point. This is a starship, not a nature preserve. Oh, I'm missing a pip.

Seven:

You asked me to broaden my knowledge of human behaviour.

Janeway:

I'm not questioning your goals, Seven. Oh. It's your methods. You shouldn't be taking field notes on the crew. Help me with this, will you please? Have you ever considered trying it yourself? Romance, I mean?

Seven:

I do not require a romantic relationship.

Janeway:

So why did you collect 30,000 gigaquads of data on the subject? I'm late.

Sickbay. 20 minutes.

With the Doctor still stunned and a little gleeful at the news that Seven has selected the subject of her first date, and invited him out, Tom Paris shows up for his shift in Sickbay.

[Who'd she pick?] [It sounds like you're getting a little infatuated with your star pupil.] [Infatuated? That's absurd!]

Paris:

Sorry I'm late.

Doctor:

It's quite all right. In fact, why don't you take the day off. Relax. Those double shifts are going to take a lot out of you.

Paris:

Oh?

Doctor:

Seven of Nine has a date tonight. If all goes well, as I'm sure it will, he'll accompany her to the reception tomorrow.

Paris:

Who'd she pick?

Doctor:

Lieutenant William Chapman.

Paris:

Ha! Chapman? Good luck.

Doctor:

What's that supposed to mean?

Paris:

Well, he's renowned for being nervous around women.

Doctor:

So?

Paris:

Are you kidding? Seven's dominant personality will have him running for the airlock before dessert.

Doctor:

Seven may seem intimidating. But that's only a reaction to the way people treat her. In fact, she's an efficient and charming young woman.

Paris:

Efficient, I'll give you that. But charming?

Doctor:

Most people don't take the time to look beyond her exterior. Did you know she has a lovely singing voice?

Paris:

Uh, no. I didn't. But then again, I've never asked her to sing for me.

Doctor:

What are you implying?

Paris:

Well, it sounds like you're getting a little infatuated with your star pupil.

Doctor:

Infatuated? That's absurd.

Paris:

Whatever you say, maestro.

Doctor:

It was part of a lesson plan!
